UAE Establishes First Federal Geographical Indications System
Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates has officially launched its inaugural federal geographical indications (GI) system, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s intellectual property framework. The Ministry of Economy introduced the new system on May 12, 2025, to provide legal protection and promote products intrinsically linked to specific regions within the country.
This pioneering initiative aims to safeguard local products that possess distinct qualities, reputation, or other characteristics primarily attributable to their geographical origin. The new framework will offer a robust mechanism for protecting traditional goods and agricultural produce, ensuring their authenticity and preventing misuse of their regional designations.
The implementation of this federal GI system is a strategic move to enhance the commercial value of Emirati products and support local producers. By securing legal protection, the system is expected to foster economic growth in specific regions, encourage higher quality standards, and boost consumer confidence in products bearing a GI mark. It represents a key development in the UAE’s commitment to building a comprehensive and modern intellectual property ecosystem.
